Rice toner benefits: what it does for your skin, and how to use it
Korean rice toners are everywhere. What they actually do, who they suit, how to use one morning and night, and why homemade rice water is not the same thing.
Rice has been part of beauty routines across East Asia for centuries — the water left from washing rice was used on skin and hair long before anyone bottled it. Korean rice toners are the modern, formulated version of that idea.
What a rice toner does
A rice toner is a hydrating toner with rice extract as its headline ingredient. Used after cleansing, it:
- Adds a layer of hydration that the serum and moisturiser after it can seal in.
- Leaves skin soft and smooth, which is why it is often described as giving a glow.
- Helps skin look more even over time, when used consistently alongside sunscreen.
- Is gentle — there is nothing in a good rice toner designed to strip or exfoliate.
Who it suits
Milky rice toners suit dry, normal and combination skin best, and they are especially useful in winter. Very oily skin may find a milky texture too rich twice a day; use it once, at night, or choose a lighter watery toner.
How to use it
- Cleanse, and pat your face almost dry.
- Pour a little toner into your palms and press it into your skin rather than wiping with cotton. Less waste, less friction.
- On dry days, repeat two or three times, letting each layer sink in first.
- Follow with serum, then moisturiser — and sunscreen in the morning.
It pairs naturally with a brightening serum. Glow Deep Serum: Rice + Alpha-Arbutin (Rs 3,900) continues the rice theme with an ingredient aimed at uneven tone.
Why homemade rice water is not the same
Plenty of people make rice water at home, and it is tempting — it costs almost nothing. The difference is that a formulated toner is preserved and pH-balanced. Homemade rice water is neither: it starts to grow bacteria within a day or two at room temperature, and its strength varies every time.
If you use it, make it fresh and never store it. For your daily face routine, a formulated toner is the safer choice.
What rice toner will not do
It will not change your skin colour, and nothing should. What it can do is make skin look more hydrated, smoother and more even. Be wary of any product that promises to make you fairer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use rice toner every day?
Yes — it is a gentle hydrating step, made for daily use. Patch test first on your inner arm if your skin is sensitive.
Is rice toner good for oily skin?
It can be, used once a day. Oily skin often still needs hydration; if a milky texture feels heavy, a watery toner will suit you better.
Toner or serum first?
Toner first. The rule is thinnest to thickest: toner, then serum, then moisturiser.
