Nursing bras in Pakistan: how to choose one that works from pregnancy to feeding

When to buy a nursing bra, how to size one while your body is still changing, which opening is easiest one-handed, and what nursing bras cost in Pakistan.

Cotton nursing bra for breastfeeding

A nursing bra has one job a normal bra does not: it has to open with one hand, while you are holding a baby with the other, often half asleep. Everything about choosing one well comes back to that.

When to buy

Most mothers buy their first nursing bras in the last couple of months of pregnancy, once their size has largely settled. Buy too early and the band may be too tight by the end; leave it until after the birth and you will be shopping when you least want to.

Nursing bras are comfortable to wear while you are still pregnant, so there is no reason to wait for the baby.

How to size a nursing bra

Sizing is where most people go wrong, because your body is still changing.

  • Measure your underbust now, not your size before pregnancy. The ribcage is what expands, and the band is what has to accommodate it.
  • Do not size up for the cup. Nursing styles are cut with room for your breasts to fill out when your milk comes in. Size for the band only.
  • Buy for the loosest hook. Your ribcage will gradually come back in after the birth, and the tighter hooks are there for that.
Size Underbust (inches) Underbust (cm)

34 29–31 74–79
36 31–33 79–84

M 30–33 76–84
L 33–36 84–91
XL 36–39 91–99

The three kinds of opening

Drop-down clips

A clip at the top of each strap lets the cup fold down. The most common style, and the easiest to do one-handed once you have practised it a few times.

Pull-aside

A soft, stretchy cup you simply move to one side. No hardware at all, which makes it the most comfortable choice for night feeds and sleep.

Front zip or front fastening

Opens fully at the front. Useful if you find clips fiddly, and easy to put on when you are sore after the birth.

Wired or wire-free?

Most mothers find wire-free far more comfortable while feeding, when breasts change size through the day. Every nursing bra we sell is wire-free.

Cotton or lace?

Cotton is cool, soft and easy to wash every day — the practical choice for most of the year here. Lace looks and feels more like your usual lingerie, and many mothers keep one for going out.

How many do you need?

Three is a sensible number: one on, one in the wash, one spare. Add a soft sleep bra if you feed at night, and keep a pack of nursing pads, which you will find at most pharmacies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a nursing bra while pregnant?

Yes. They are soft, stretchy and usually wire-free, which is exactly what you want in the last months of pregnancy anyway.

Should I buy a bigger cup to allow for milk?

No. Nursing cups are already cut with room to fill out. Size for your band and let the cup do its job.

Can I sleep in a nursing bra?

A soft pull-aside style, yes. It keeps nursing pads in place and makes night feeds quicker.
