Strapless bras for wedding season: what to wear under a lehenga, sharara or backless choli

Off-shoulder, sweetheart and backless blouses are everywhere this shaadi season. Which strapless bra works under which outfit, what to do with a fuller bust, and the test to run before the mehndi.

Strapless push-up bra for wedding outfits

Shaadi season is when the strapless bra comes out of the drawer. Off-shoulder necklines, sweetheart cholis, deep backs on the walima outfit — and a long night of standing, hugging and dancing in them.

The right strapless bra for each outfit is not the same one, and knowing which is which saves a lot of discomfort.

First, ask your tailor

Before you buy anything: if your blouse or choli is being stitched with built-in cups, you may not need a bra at all. Many tailors add padded cups to formal blouses as standard. Decide before the final fitting, because the cups have to be placed for your body, and a bra underneath them will look bulky.

Match the bra to the neckline

Off-shoulder and sweetheart necklines

A strapless bra with a proper band is the right choice. It holds by gripping around your ribcage, so it stays put through a long evening. A front-closure style is easier to get into once your hair and jewellery are done.

Backless or very low-back blouses

A banded bra will show. This is what adhesive (sticky) bras are for: they attach to the breast itself, with nothing at the back or sides.

Sheer or net necklines

Choose a seamless, nude-toned strapless bra so nothing reads through the fabric under lights and camera flash.

If you have a fuller bust

Strapless bras do all their work with the band, so for a larger bust the band matters even more.

  • Choose a firm, wide band with silicone grip along the top and bottom edges.
  • Go for a three-quarter or full cup rather than a balconette.
  • If you are between two sizes, take the smaller band. A strapless that is slightly loose will slide down all evening.
  • Adhesive bras are best for smaller to medium busts. With a fuller bust, a banded strapless is usually the more reliable choice.

Adhesive bras: how to make them stay

  • Apply to clean, completely dry skin. No moisturiser, body oil or perfume where it sticks.
  • Put it on before you dress, not after.
  • Heat and sweat weaken adhesive. For an outdoor event or a packed hall, a banded strapless is the safer option.

Run the dholki test

Wear the bra with the actual outfit for an hour at home, a few days before. Raise both arms above your head, sit down, stand up, and dance for a song. If it has slipped by then, it will slip at the mehndi.

Getting your skin ready too

Off-shoulder and backless blouses show your neck, shoulders and back as much as your face. Our 4-week pre-bridal skincare routine is a simple week-by-week plan you can follow at home before the dholki.

Frequently asked questions

Which strapless bra is best for large breasts?

One with a firm, wide band, silicone grip and a three-quarter or full cup. Take the smaller band if you are between sizes.

Will a sticky bra hold in the heat?

It will struggle. Adhesive weakens with sweat, so for summer weddings or outdoor functions, choose a banded strapless instead.

Can I wear a strapless push-up bra all day?

You can, but a strapless bra works harder than a normal one. For a full wedding day, have a regular bra to change into for the parts where your neckline allows it.
